1111p.
44141f—A—
E TETT
4iid ?
RESOLUTION NO. 4204
A resolution in support of the campaign to keep the USS. Missouri in Bremerton.
WHEREAS,the USS Missouri is perhaps the most historic maritime battleship in the
U.S. Navy's storied history, having been the site of the official surrender of the Japanese
to the Allied Forces on September 2, 1945; and
WHEREAS,the USS Missouri has been moored for many years in the Puget Sound
Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash.; and
WHEREAS,the State of Washington has enjoyed a rich and historic relationship with
the U.S. Navy that has benefitted not only Everett but communities throughout the Puget
Sound; and
WHEREAS,thousands of Puget Sound residents have been a part of this longstanding
relationship with the Navy, including those from our area who either served aboard,
worked aboard, or helped maintain the USS Missouri; and
WHEREAS,the Navy has continued a long legacy of active military presence in the
Puget Sound region with the establishment of Naval Station Everett, one of the world's
most modern and ecologically sensitive military bases; and
WHEREAS,the Everett community has made clear that it considers the Navy not just a
critical component of the U.S. national security efforts but also a trusted neighbor and
friend; and
WHEREAS,the Navy and the Department of Defense have now put the USS Missouri
on the inactive rolls with the ultimate goal of relocating the ship from the Puget Sound
Naval Shipyard to a community that will embrace the Missouri for its historic value and
transform it into a floating maritime museum; and
WHEREAS, a campaign is underway by Congressional and state legislative leaders
representing Washington State to keep the USS Missouri in Bremerton; and
WHEREAS, City Councils in communities such as Bremerton and Oak Harbor have lent
their political support to this worthy effort; and
WHEREAS, should this effort come to fruition, the USS Missouri would become a
leading tourist attraction which would draw thousands of people to the Puget Sound and
benefit not only Bremerton and Kitsap County but the entire State of Washington.
