(WJE)has performed a limited assessment of fire
damage at 1702 62nd Street SE in Everett,Washington. You have asked that we visit the site, observe fire
damage to wood framing and adjacent concrete building elements, and provide an opinion on the general
scope of repair required to correct the fire damage. This letter presents our findings.
Background
The Flowers residence is a one-and-a-half story, wood framed over concrete basement, single family
residence. According to Snohomish County records, the home was originally constructed in 1941. We
understand that a fire originated from the electrical service lines connected to the exterior of the home in
May 2018.
Observations
At the time of our site visit, the exterior electrical service conduit and wire had been removed, as well as
the corner trim board at the southeast building corner and two siding boards on the east elevation(Figure 1).
On the south elevation, the siding boards were charred approximately three feet back from the building
corner. The lowermost board was easily pulled away from the building, exposing board sheathing that was
charred just a few inches back from the corner in each direction. The building paper weather resistive barrier
beneath the siding appears to only have burned a few inches back from the building corner and less than
one foot above the top of the foundation(Figure 2).Char at the rim joist was less than 1/2 inch deep over a
very small area at the building corner(Figure 3).
At the building interior, investigative openings were made by others at one wall stud bay on the main floor
(Figure 4) and at two locations in the basement ceiling(Figure 5 and Figure 6).No char or other damage
was observed on the framing exposed at the interior openings.
Smoke staining was observed on the exterior face of the foundation wall for a distance of approximately
two feet from the southwest building corner along the south elevation. Similar staining was observed on
the adjacent concrete slab on ground(Figure 2).
Headquarters&Laboratories—Northbrook,Illinois
Atlanta I Austin I Boston I Chicago I Cleveland(Dallas I Denver I Detroit I Honolulu I Houston I Indianapolis I Los Ang s I Minneapolis I New Haven
New York I Philadelphia I Pittsburgh I Portland I Princeton I Raleigh I San Antonio I San Francisco I Seattle'South FI 'da I Washington,DC
