, t
.j[ ENGNEER
. IWI4 Mr.VladAPC1111'LCIS Statewide&Domus
MA[ 12I:11.5 SC[E4T1>I"S May 18,2018
Page 2
No significant spalling or cracking was observed in either concrete surface. However, what appeared to be
an area of poor concrete consolidation at the building corner, upon closer inspection was found to be wood
debris embedded within the concrete(Figure 7).The embedded wood was not charred.
Hammer sounding the stained regions of concrete did not identify any regions of delamination or softening
of the concrete surface. However, small areas of concrete paste surrounding the embedded wood debris did
break away.
Discussion and Repair Scope
The lack of charring of wood embedded in the concrete and lack of concrete delamination or spalls indicates
that the concrete was not exposed to high temperatures for an extended period of time. Therefore, the
concrete is likely unaffected by the fire. However, unless done with care, cleaning the concrete surface to
remove fire related staining may further dislodge the embedded wood debris and the cement paste that
surrounds it.
Charred wood siding and wood board wall sheathing should be removed and replaced. This will likely
require removal of the majority of the wood siding between the building corner and exterior door on the
south elevation to obtain a uniform appearance and staggering of joints between individual courses. On the
east elevation, removal of the siding from the underside of the window to the top of the foundation will
allow for removal of char in the wall sheathing below and for an appropriate lap of new weather resistive
barrier where the existing has been burned or torn.
Where charred, the wood board wall sheathing can be replaced with plywood of equal thickness. Given the
very limited amount of charring on the rim joist, cutting out small sections of rim joist and patching back
with new 2x material is appropriate. See Figure 8 for additional repair detail. Interior finishes at
investigative openings can be patched back with like kind materials.
Please let us know if we can be of further assistance with this project.
Sincerely,
WISS,JANNEY,ELSTNER ASSOCIATES,INC.
#004000/00,00.. ._
.:::.;#7: 4,
John R.
