Darden Restaurants, Inc. September 15,2011
Proposed Olive Garden—Everett,Washington Page 2 of 12
If any of the noted information is incorrect or has changed, please inform PSI so that we may
amend the recommendations presented in this report, if appropriate. If PSI is not retained to
perform this function, PSI can not be responsible for the impact of the changes on the performance
of the project.
1.2 Scope of Geotechnical Services
1.2.1 Field Exploration
To obtain information regarding the subsurface conditions, PSI advanced four Standard
Penetration Test (SPT) soil test borings to depths of approximately 16 to 16'/2 feet within the
proposed building footprint. The borings were advanced with a CME 85 drill rig using continuous-
flight, hollow-stem augers. At the test boring locations, standard penetration tests (SPTs) were
performed in general accordance with ASTM D1586 at standard intervals to the termination
depths. During standard penetration testing, soil samples were obtained at each test interval.
The standard penetration test data was used to estimate the in-situ soil strength and
compressibility.
Following completion of the field services, the recovered soil samples were returned to our office
for classification and laboratory analysis. The results of the subsurface exploration,
classifications, and laboratory test results are presented herein, together with geotechnical
recommendations for site preparation and building support.
1.2.2 Laboratorv Testinq
The samples obtained during the drilling operation were placed in sealed and labeled containers
and transported to our Tacoma laboratory. Representative soil samples were selected for
laboratory testing to determine their index properties. The laboratory-testing program included:
natural moisture content determination tests (ASTM D2216) and grain-size analysis (ASTM
C136). The laboratory test results are presented further within the report. Laboratory testing was
performed in general accordance with ASTM procedures. Unless otherwise informed, the soil
samples will be discarded 90 days from the issuance of the report.
1.3 Site Description
The proposed Olive Garden site is located in a parking lot of the Everett Mall in Everett,
Snohomish County, Washington. The site is bordered to the northwest by SE Everett Mall Way,
to the northeast by Central Mall Drive, and to the southeast and southwest by a parking lot. The
Everett Mall is located about 200 feet south of the proposed Olive Garden site.
The site is currently utilized as part of the parking lot for the Everett Mall. Landscaping areas
vegetated with shrubs and trees are located northeast and northwest of the site, and two
landscaping islands are located in the planned building area. PSI was not a part of the original
site development.
The ground surface within the site generally slopes slightly down toward the south. Based on a
review of USGS topographic maps, the site has an approximate elevation of 520 feet above mean
sea level (MSL).
