Harmon 8 Associates W-4545
15 April 1985 Paye 3
indicated on the test pit iogs are based on observation of the soil properties
during excavation and are, therefore interpretive in nature.
4.0 SUBSURfACE CONDITIONS
In general. we encountered glacial till overlain by fill or both peat and fill
duriny our exploration. The unweathered glacial till found at depth is a very
dense, moist. 9ray, gravelly, silty sand. At this site, the upper 2- 3 feet of ,
till is weathered to a browri color and a medium dense state. -Generally, glacial
till is a relatively incompressible soil that has bene glacially overrridden and,
subjected to the Neight of thousands of feet of ice during deposition. Both the
unweathered and weathered glacial tills are suitable load-bearing materials for
the proposed structures, although the weathered soil has a somewhat lower loatl-
bearing capacity than the unweathered till. ,
In the vicinity of test pits TP-1 through TP-8 we encountered a wedge of fill
which apparently th}c-kens to the swth to a maximum depth of 9 feet at our test
git locations. The fill material is generally loose moist to wet. gray,
gravelly, silty sand, or gravelly sand wi•th some silt. The fill wedge appears to
pinch out to 2 feet thickness or less by test pits TP-4, TP-6, and TP-8.
In test pits TP-1, TP-1 and TP-3 we encountered peat beneath the fill. The peat
is an organic silt with considerable wood debris, including up to 10-inch
diameter logs. The thickness af the peat in test pit TP-3 was 4-1/2 feet. We
were not able to reach the bottom of the peat in test pits TP-1 and TP-2. The
peat Was absent in test pits TP-5 and TP-8.
Variab7e amounts of fi-11, ranging from 0 to 6 feet in depth. was encountered over
the rest of the site. It is unlikely that any fill on this site was placed in
accordance wfth acceptable fill placement procedures and thus, would probably not
provide suitable support for foundations. pavements, or other settlement-
sensitive structures without remedial efforts.
n
