i
Iperformed during vet weather, ve recomnend tha[ critical surfaces such as
subgrades in building areas be covered vith asphalt-trea[ed base (1T8) or a
gravel pad to protect the eposed soils from dis[urbance.
Excava[ions: We anticipate that a rela[ively deep excava[ion may be
( required for construction of the new spillway for the earth dam which impounds
Ithe existing manmade lake. Gxcavationc will also be riquired Eor [he Phase 2
building. However, these building excavations are expected to be shallow as
I [he adjacent ground surface will be graded to about the same level as Che
Uuilding slab.
De[ailed information regarding the configura[ion of [he new spillway is
not available a[ [his time an' only limi[ed gotechnical commen[s c:in be made
I regarding construction of the spillway. The large quan[ity of wa[er re[ained
in the manmade lake is the major factor which could affect spillway construc-
tion. As indicated Uy the results of Boring 4, [he fill ma[erials which make
up Che exis[ing earth dam appear [o be reasonably competent. RelaCively
steeply sloped open cuts should be [easible in these embmikment materials pro-
Ividing [hat water from the nanmade lake is adequa[ely handled. Considera[ion
should be given to lowering the water level in the lake as much as possible
I to reduce potential impacts on spillway const[uction.
( Seepage irom perched ground water zones may be encountered in some exca-
I vations. We anticipa[e tha[ thi.s seepage can be handled by installing [ert-
purary drainage ditches aid sumps within the excavations and pumping from
I [hese sumps as necessary. In addition, a system oE swales and drainage ditches
should be installed around the perimeter of [he excavation to intercept sur-
face runoff.
IS[ruc[ural Fill: All new fill in settlement-sensitive areas (i.e. ,
building, roadway and parking areas, and earth di.kes) should be placed as
Icompacted structural fill afcer the exposed soils have been prepared as
described above. We recoimcend that the fill be placed i.n horizontal lifts
not exceeding 10 inches In loose [hLckness and mechanically compacted to [he
criteria presented in Table l. The moisture content of the fill ma[erial
should be adjusted as necessary to achieve [he reGuired degree of compaction.

_ ( -
GeoEngineers
Incorporated
