 Mr. &' Rucker W-8396
25 SeErtembr 1892 Pape 3
^ and would supportndjacent slope inciined at about sisH:1 V IHorizontal:Vertical. Due to the limked
acces and steepnest of ths tlope, a eantilevered soldisr pile system would appear to be the most
,_ pnctical wall typs available.
SUBSURfACE EXPLORATION
Our subaurtacs exploration propram for this projeet consisted of advancinp siuteen backhoe test piu
in potendal Ixetions for new residences, and advancinp one hollow•stem-auper borinp near the
'^ entrance drive of Sevenich Drive at the loeation of a proposed retaininp wall. Approximate locations
of the explorations completed for this ctudy are shown on ths Site and Expioration Plan, Fpuro 1,
-- attaehsd with this roport. Interprotiva descriptions of the subsurfaes conditiona encountered et the
euploration locationa orc presented at the end of thia repoK.
, , Backhos test pitt wero excavated with a rubber-tirad backhoe provided by the property owner. All
explontions wera eontinuously 1o00ed in tha fieid by an experienced enpineerinp peolopist from our
firm. In-situ smnpth and quality ataibutes of materiais encountered in the tast piu were estimated
by our field observer based on experience with similar soils and the difficulty incurred durinp
' ' ezcavation.
  .
. . The auper borinp advanced for this project was completed by a local driliinp contractor work3np under
. subconffact to our firm. The drillinp process involved advancinp a hollow-stem auper into the pround,
and collectinp samples at repular intervals throuph the hollow auper etem aecordinp to a standardized
samplinp method. Auper drillinp samples were obtained by the Standard Penetration Test (SPT)
method in accordance with ASTM D-1586, which allows correlation of the Standard Penetration
resistance, N, or blowcount.
Reprasantative samples of soils encountered in the test pits and auper borinps were placed in moiature
tipht containers and retumed to the laboratory for furthar elaasification. The depths ahown on ths lops
are approximate, and where chanies were Oradual, represent avernpe values.
SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS
Subsurface conditions observed in our explorations were somewhat variable across the site. At the
Oround surface, a root•rich oryanic topsoil horizon was peneraily observed to be about l5 to 2 feet in
thickness. Below this surficial topsoil horizon, medium dense silty fine sands or medium stiff silt to
fine sandy silt were typically encountered to depths of about 434 to 10 feet. Several test pits
. , AGRA
Earth&Environmental Group
