Jan Meston
From: Falken Forshaw [falken@studiofalken.com]
Sent: Tuesday, November 27, 2012 2:02 PM
To: Jan Meston
Subject: "New Plaza"
Dear Ms Meston: As a long-term resident of Everett, (and a former Chairman of the EHC), I would like to offer
comment on the Proposal to Name the New Plaza as "City Plaza".
The name, "City Plaza" implies that this is the center place of the City of Everett, a place deserving of
recognition of that role more specifically, at least. The name as proposed does not refer to any city or to any
place in the one that it is located (as in, "Everett City Plaza", or "Wetmore Playa"). The name, as proposed,
might work if there is more vision attached to its design and that of the surrounding area, so that the space
serves as a center place. This would mean that the place is more than a "Plaza" (not traditionally a center place,
just a place as the word means) and thus in need of a richer term as a City Center.
There are many other more lively and appropriate possible names (besides the two mentioned in an above
sentence). They could include references to its function as a pla7n for education and arts performance (echoing
"Library Place" nomenclature); a reference to the generations of performers and artists as a means of
recognizing the vitality of arts in Everett; or even to a local visionary supporter of visual and performing arts,
historic or present-day... certainly a model of arts support. The sense of Delphian comes to mind.
The name could even refer in some more evocative sense, using a term that will serve future generations, as use
of the Pla7n might change over time and become more important. An appropriate name could boost this sense
of the place to generate interest in gathering. Certainly such a place as that needing a name in this case deserves
more consideration for a range of choices from which to choose a worthy title for this place near the center of
downtown Everett. I recommend considering a wider choice of names before a decision is made.
Many thanks for the opportunity to submit comments,
Falken Forshaw
Falken Forshaw
Studio::Falken
falken@studiofalken.com
studiofalken.com
425-343-4754
1
