The Parks Department
submitted a naming proposal for the public plaza. Under Resolution No. 6537 (Naming Policy), a proposal to
establish or change the name of a City -owned facility including parks and public places must be reviewed in
accordance with the Naming Policy. As required by the Naming Policy, the Historical Commission
considered the proposed naming of the plaza submitted by the Parks Department, which was "City Plaza."
The Historical Commission forwarded the proposal to the Parks Board of Commissioners for a
recommendation. The recommendation from the Parks Board of Commissioners to the Historical
Commission was to name the plaza either "Theatre Plaza" or "Wetmore Theatre Plaza." The Historical
Commission held a public hearing on January 22, 2013, and has recommended either name as appropriate for
the new plaza. They did not favor one over the other. The Commission's action takes the form of a
recommendation to the City Council.
The City Council is required to hold a public hearing, which is scheduled for March 20, 2013. After
conducting the public hearing, the City Council may select one of the names recommended by the Historical
Commission, or select a different name. Two alternative resolutions are attached, supporting either
recommended name. In accordance with the Naming Policy, Council is to take action on the naming
proposal by adopting a resolution.
RECOMMENDATION (Exact action requested of Council):
Adopt Resolution establishing the name for the public plaza located south of the Everett Performing Arts
Center on Wetmore Avenue.
1
