The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) cross connection regulatlons require water
purveyors, such as Everett, to maintain safe drinking water by taking precautfons to ensure that fire
protedion water in both commercial and residential sprinkler systems dces not backflow into the publfc
system. In the past, single check valves were considered as an adequate backflow device for commercial
properlies. However, DOH has determined that dwble check detector assemblies (DCDA) are the
minimum acceptable backFlow protection device (or commercial fire protectlon systems. Some
commercial buildings in Everett still have single check-valves installed, which now must be upgraded to a
DCDA (or commercial fire services when new construction is planned that will affect Flre services. This
adAitlonal protedion is necessary to adhere to DOH regulations and ensure safe drinking wa[er.
Sincerely,
 .k_
Tim Markham, WQCO
Cross Connection Specialist
cc: Permit Services Manager Paul McKee, Assfstant Fire Marshal ]im Venturo, Utilitles Records Manager
Verl Sly, Meg Haley
CITY OF EVERETT • 3200 Cedar Street • Everett, WA 98201 • (425) 257-8800 • 'ax(425) 257-8882
