JUSTUS FISHER
3 i 06 Nordi 31 st Street
Tacoma, Washington 98407-6405 Repon 2339-01
April 23. 2002
To: Charlcs Souder, General Manager
TC Systcros, Inc.
1028 1V Marinc Vicw Dricr.
Gvcrett, WA 98201
Rc: Report 2339-01
At your rcyucst I inspcctcd thc dip tank lic vith you, n4onday April 1. "?00_'. Thc
purposc of the inspection was to cvaluate the structural implications of some failed
sidewall memlxrs. 'i'he Tanks :ve stainless stecl with mild stecl framcs. approximately 60
Pt long x 3 Ft wide x 12 T deep, :md arc grouped in sets of three or four tanks side by
side. A stcel framework spports thc tanks approximately 2 Fl abcwc the iloor and a
catwalk system around and between ihe tanks approximately 10 T above the floor.
1'hc tank alls are supported by " channels. The channels have failed lxtveen three
taiiks in onc set, and the tank walls have de(lected acainst cach other. The outer walls of
thc sct are straight. I understand }•ou hae tound no significunt deterioration of the outer
ch nncs or ather frame mcmbers. We did not obscne ::ny other signs of distress.
In my opinion thc deterioratcd framc mcmlxrs betvccn the tanks do not represent an
immediatc problem rovided that the fluid leels in the adjacent tanks are maintuww .
approimatcly the same IeveL I recommend that the frame be repa'ved as soon as
practicable :uid that vhcn the tanks are drained, to drain them simultancously lo avoid
sienilicant diflcrential luid Iccls. I recommend that tlm intcrior framc members on thc
othcr tanks thoroughly exanuned when the repa'v work is done. Stainless steel may be
uscd in licu of lhc mild slccl lo providc longer lifc in the repa'ved strec+.+re iCdesircd.
Providing a stainless steel Oashing ovcr the tank edges to prcvent spill3ge between the
tanks, as ou suggested, should help reducc the corrosin rate on dic frame members.
Prcparcd by
Gric V.
