Crow-Western E-2708
August 14, 1985 Page 3
logs, Plates 4 through 10, for a detailed description of the
coniitions encountered at each location exploreG. A description
of the field exploration methods and labcraLory testing program is
included in tliis report followiny the Discussion and
Recommendations section. The following is a ceneralized
description of the subsurface conditions encountered.
Generally the site is immediately underlain by two to three
feet oE lcose sands and sandy silts. Beneath this surficial
mantle, our test pits encounLered dense sandy "till" soils.
The exception to this description was encountered in Teat Pits
TP-1 through TP-3 where from one to six feet of loose to medium
dense Eill soils were encounCered. Beneath the fills, Test Pits
TP-1 and 1'P-2 encountered one to two Eeet of organic soils,
respectively. All of these test pits were terminated within dense
native till soils. Additional shallow fills were encountered in
Test Pit TP-13.
Groundwater
The groundwaCer seepage levels observed while excavatiny are
shown on the test pit lors. Grundwater seepaye was encontered
in Test Pits TP-2 and 'I'Y-9 through TP-6. Generally, on sites such
as this which are underlain at relatively shallow depths by dense
fill soils, "perchei" water tahles Eorm during the winter. These
perched groundwater conditions iorm when water inEiltral-es through
the more permeable near-surEace soils and subsequently becomes
"percted" above the nearby impecmeable till soils. The
groundwaCer seapage level is not sl:atic, thus one may expect
fluctu, srions in the level depending on the amount oE rainEall,
surEace wal-er runoff, and otler factors. Generally tla water
level is higher in the weCter winL-er months.
DISCUSSION AND RECOlMEliUATIONS
General
The three salient geoCachnical aspects uf this site are:
1) the loose uncontrolled fills present on portions of. the
site
2) the fine grained moisture sensitive nature oE the site
suils
3) the low relieE and near surface perche9 gcoundwater tables
The loose fills are not. capahle of. supporting the proposed
struclures without excessive ciifEerenlial settlements.
