Sound Transit is responsible for the development of a "spine" mass transit system for
the Puget Sound - three county - region. The current transportation package will provide
fixed guideway (rail) to Lynnwood by 2023. While planning for extension of the rail
system is underway, there is no additional funding at this time to build the rail system
from Lynnwood to Everett. That will require approval by the Washington State
Legislature and voters before the system can be completed. The soonest that package
could be before the voters would be 2016.
Paul Roberts is a member of the Everett City Council. He is Chair of the Puget Sound
Clean Air Agency Board, Vice Chair of Sound Transit Board, and Vice President of the
Association of Washington Cities Board. His career covers over 40 years in both public
and private sectors. He served as Planning and Community Development Director for
the City of Everett, Public Works Director and Assistant City Manager for the City of
Marysville, private sector consultant with BERK, special advisor to Governor Booth
Gardner addressing economic and environmental analysis and permitting for the Navy
base at Everett Washington, and Chief of Staff to Congressman Norm Dicks. The views
expressed are his own.
12
