Currently,this duct does
not include sprinkler heads in a-40'horizontal section of ductwork above the roof trusses or at
the manifold of the exhaust ducts. Sprinklers are listed as requirements in NFPA 33,Section
9.6.6. The duct section in question is highlighted in attached drawings 40-025-CWM260-13-825
and 40-025-CWM260-14-825 and"Schematic View of Exhaust Duct."
Per NFPA 33,Section 9.6.6.1,sprinklers located within this exhaust duct require access openings
for inspection and maintenance. The existing horizontal ductwork and manifold is installed
above the roof trusses, therefore currently inaccessible, creating difficulty for sprinklers to be
properly maintained.Providing access to this section of duct is both cost and schedule
prohibitive to the project, therefore FSi is seeking to obtain approval for alternate means and
methods to remove requirements listed in NFPA 33 for this section of duct. The listed
requirements in question are items two and three(sprinkler every 12 on center and sprinkler
located at the manifold and the junction of the exhaust duct) from Section 9.6.6 in NFPA 33.
FSi believes that the intent of the IFC Section 101.3 (quoted below) and the purpose of NFPA 33
are met without providing sprinklers in the subject section of duct.FSi is seeking to obtain
approval to exclude these sprinklers per Section 104.8 (quoted below).
18800.011 Richland TLAC Overhang Fire Protection Alternatives 1 of 3
