FSi consulting engineers page 2
2015 IFC Chapter 1- "Scope and Administration"Section 101.3 Intent "The purpose of this
code is to establish the minimum requirements consistent with nationally recognized good
practice for providing a reasonable level of life safety and property protection from hazards of fire,
explosion or dangerous conditions in new and existing buildings, structures and premises, and to
provide a reasonable level of safety to fire fighters and emergency responders during emergency
operations."
2015 IFC Chapter 1 "Scope and Administration" Section 104.8 Modifications "Where there
are practical difficulties involved in carrying out the provisions of this code, the fire code official
shall have the authority to grant modifications for individual cases provided the fire code official
shall first find that special individual reasons makes the strict letter of this code impractical and
the modification is in compliance with the intent and purpose of this code and that the
modification does not lessen health, life and safety requirements."
The intent of the IFC and purpose of NFPA 33 are met due to the following factors:
• The existing duct sprinkler system has provided protection to the exhaust duct from an
existing spray application area for approximately 30 years without this horizontal run
containing sprinklers.
• The spray application enclosure, filters, exhaust duct, and exhaust fan are designed to
eliminate potential sources of ignition. This section of duct in question is located over
300 feet away from the spray process.
• This existing duct in question is located in a remote location with no impact to life
safety.
• All other exhaust ducts from the spray application booth have been designed to have
sprinkler coverage per NFPA 33,including immediately upstream and downstream of
the of exhaust ducting in question. This project increases the overall sprinkler coverage
of this duct run by adding sprinklers to the existing underground ductwork(cast-in-
place concrete),previously unprotected.
• The exhaust air is filtered at point of use by a series of blanket,NESHAP,and NEPA
filters within the spray application enclosure and prior to entering the exhaust duct.
• Excluding the sprinklers from this section of duct does not introduce an increased
chance of property damage. This is due to the fact that the exhaust duct section in
question has building fire sprinklers installed both above the duct,as part of the
building high-bay protection system, and fire sprinklers below the duct to continue this
coverage.
\\fsi-fs01\job\15050 Everett Factory Transformation\15050.825.01 777x 40-25 WBJ MCS Pos 3 Design\Construction\Fire
Protection Variance\Boeing Everett Exhaust Fire Protection Memo.docx 2 of 3
