To qualify as wetland, three criteria are met. These criteria include the presence of vegetation, soil
types, and hydrology that are characteristic of wetland areas(WA ST DOE 1987).
Vegetation of wetlands consists of plants typically adapted to thrive in areas where anaerobic soil
conditions prevail for a long portion of the growing season. Categories based on the likelihood
of a plant occurring in association with wetland areas are the basis for determining whether a site
meets the vegetation criteria. Areas within the property that are dominated by facultative (34-
66%probability wetland indicator); facultative wetland(67-99%), and/or obligate (>99%)
indicator plants meet the wetland criteria for present of hydric vegetation.
Soil types that occupy wetlands are hydric soils, or soils that are characteristic of reducing soil
conditions. A hydric soil is a soil that formed under conditions of saturation, flooding, or ponding
long enough during the growing season to develop anaerobic conditions in the upper part. (USDA
NRCS 1995). Soils on the property are mapped as Alderwood gravelly sandy loam. Alderwood
series are moderately well drained soils found on ridges and hills. Alderwood soils were formed in
glacial drift and/or glacial outwash over dense glaciomarine. Soils found within the wetland are
clayey silty loam with a very sandy loam layer at 10-12 inches. Where the sand layer was deeper than
20 inches,saturation was not found.
. ...
fc • :41 Figure: 5 Soil Map
3—Alderwood gravelly sandy loam
CS .r `Jr
[•94.v_'YYV4.3k,', !, meq`
The term"wetland hydrology"encompasses all hydrologic characteristics of areas that are
periodically inundated or have soils saturated to the surface for a sufficient duration during the
growing season.
Wetland A
A 491-square foot Category IV slope wetland is found on the parcel to the south. The wetland is
located along the base of fill associated with the home site south of the property line. The
wetland is located within an area of the property that has been maintained as landscaping(Asian
pear trees, lawn)in the past.
Cowardin classification is Palustrine emergent wetland with seasonal saturation.
6
