68/18/2005 15:27 4257478561 GEOTECH PAGE 11
Lucia Dewelopment tLC JN p5233
August 18,2005 Page 10
Caeoteeh Conaultsnta, Inc., aRer dte aHe ia etripped and cut to grede. Rewmmendations for the
compadbn ot structural flll beneath pavemenM are given in the sectlon entitled Oeaera/
Eaifhwork snd SWctura! Fi11. The perfortnance of site pavements ie diroctly rclated to the
strength and stabilfty ot the underlyiny eubgrade.
The pavement for lightly loaded traMic and parkiny areaa should conslsl of 2 Inehes of asohalt
concrete(AC) over 4 inches of ctushed rock base(CRB)or 3 inches of asphalt-trasted base (ATB).
We recommend prnviding heavily loaded areas wRh 3 inches of AC over 6 Inehes ot CR8 or 4
inchas of ATB. Heawly loaded arcas are typically main driveways, dumpster sites, or areas wNh
fruck traffle. Inueased maintenance and more frequent epairs should be expaded if thinner
pavement sections rre used.
Water irom plarrter areas and othe sources ahould not be allowed to Infiltrete Jrrto tlie pavement
sutgrede. The pavemant secdion recommendations and guidelines preaented in thla report are
bsed on our expetience in!he rea and on what hbaen suexasful In slmilasituations. Ps wkh
any pavemuMs, some malrAQnance and repair of limitad aroas can be eqeded as the paveme
ages. Cracks in the pavement shoWd be seled ae soon as possible after they beeome evideM, in
order to reduce the poterriial for degradatlon ot the subgrade from Ifilhation of suAace water. For
the sune reaaon, k ls also prudent to aeal the surfdce of the pavemeM after it has been in use for
several years. To provide tor a deslgn without the need for arry maintenance or repair would be
unewnomical.
QENERAL EAR7FANORK AND STRflGTURAL FlLL
M building and pavemeM areas should be atripped of swface vegetaflon, topsoil, otganic soil, and
other deleterious material. It is importaM that exlsting foundations be removed before Site
development. The stripped or femoved matetials should no! be mixad with any materials to be
used as struchrtal flll, but they could be'used in non-structural areds, Such as landscape beds.
Structural fill is defined as any fill, induding uh'lityr baddill, plaeed under, or dose to, a building,
behlnd pertnanerS ratainirg or foundation walls, or in other areas where the underlying soil needs
to suppoR loads. All atructural fill should be placed in horizomal lifts with a moisture corKent at, or
near, tha optimum moisturo content. The optimum moisture wntent is that moisture content that
resuRs in the greatest compacted dry density. The molature content of fill is very importaM and
must be dosely controlled during the tilling and compaction process.
The allowa6le thickness of the fill lift will depend on the material type selected, the compaedon
equipmerrt used, and the number of paases made to compact the lift. The loose lift thickness
shoufd not axeeed 12 inches. We recommend testing the fill as it is placed. If the fill is not
sulidenUy eompaCted, it pn be recompaCted before another lift is placed. This eliminates the
need to remove the fill to aehieve the required compaetion. The following table presents
recommended relative wmpactions for structural fill:
GEOTECH CONSUL fAN75,INC.
