Measures taken may include covenng
cu[ slopes with plastic shceting and diverting surface runoff away from[he top of cut slopes. We
do not recommend vertical slopes for cuts deeper than 4 feet, if worker access is necessary. We
recommend that cut slope heights and inclinations conform to local and WISHA/OSHA
standards.
We recommend that slope inclinations for shvctural fill and the cuts in the native soils be no
steeper than 2H:1 V. LighAy compacted filis or common fills should be no steeper than 3H:1 V.
Common fills are defined as fill material with some organics that are "trackrolled" into place.
They would not meet the compaction specification of structural fill. Final slopes should be
vegetated and covered with straw or jute netting. The vegetation should be maintained until it is
established.
Foundations
General: Comentional shallow spread foundations should be founded on undismrbed, medium
dense to very dese, glacial till, or be suppoRed on structural 611 or CDF extending to those soils.
If the soil at the planned bottom of footing elevation is not medium dense to very dense, it should
be overexcavated to expose suitable bearing soil, and the excavation should be filled with
sWctural fill, or the footing may be deepened. The subgrade should be evaluated by a
representative of CG prier to placement of the sWctural fill, rock spalls,CDF,or concrete for the
foorings.
If it is decided to overexcavate [he fill and replace it with structural fill, the overexcavation
should extend beyond the edge of foo[inb ^! e 1H:1V. That is, for every 1 foot of fill
overexcavated bclow the footing, the excavation should extend 1 foot vider than the edge of[he
footig. [f rock spalls arc used to place as backfill, the excavation needs to only extend
OSH:I.OV beyond the edge of foo[ing. All structural fill should be placed as described in the
Structural Fill subsection of this ietter.
CllF Trenchcs: Ar altemative to overexcavation of the fill and replacement with structural fill
is to support the struchue on CDF trenches. This is accomplished by excavating a trench through
Ihe fill, which is slightly wider than the fooiing. The bottom of the trench should expose medium
Gornerstone Geotechnical, Inc.
