previously compacted mixture shall be cut back to produce a slightly beveled edge for the
II
2 full thickness of the course.
3
I
4 5 A temporary wedge of HMA constructed on a 20H:1V shall be constructed where a
transverse joint as a result of paving or planing is open to traffic. The HMA in the temporary
6 wedge shall be separated from the permanent HMA by strips of heavy wrapping paper or
I 7 other methods approved by the Engineer. The wrapping paper shall be removed and the
8 joint trimmed to a slightly beveled edge for the full thickness of the course prior to
9 resumption of paving.
I 10
11 The material that is cut away shall be wasted and new mix shall be laid against the cut.
12 Rollers or tamping irons shall be used to seal the joint.
I 13
14 5-04.3(12)A2 Longitudinal Joints
15 The longitudinal joint in any one course shall be offset from the course immediately below by
I
16 not more than 6 inches nor less than 2 inches. All longitudinal joints constructed in the
17 wearing course shall be located at a lane line or an edge line of the Traveled Way. A
18 notched wedge joint shall be constructed along all longitudinal joints in the wearing surface
I 19 of new HMA unless otherwise approved by the Engineer. The notched wedge joint shall
20 have a vertical edge of not less than the maximum aggregate size or more than '/Z of the
21 compacted lift thickness and then taper down on a slope not steeper than 4H:1V. The
I
22 sloped portion of the HMA notched wedge joint shall be uniformly compacted.
23
24 5-04.3(12)B Bridge Paving Joint Seals
I
25
26 5-04.3(12)B1 HMA Sawcut and Seal
27 Prior to placing HMA on the bridge deck, establish sawcut alignment points at both ends of
I28 the bridge paving joint seals to be placed at the bridge ends, and at interior joints within the
29 bridge deck when and where shown in the Plans.
