I
1 5-04.3(9) HMA Mixture Acceptance
2 Acceptance of HMA shall be as provided under nonstatistical, or commercial evaluation.
3
I 4 Nonstatistical evaluation will be used for the acceptance of HMA unless Commercial
5 Evaluation is specified.
6
7 Commercial evaluation will be used for Commercial HMA and for other classes of HMA in
8 the following applications: sidewalks, road approaches, ditches, slopes, paths, trails, gores,
9 prelevel, temporary pavement, and pavement repair. Other nonstructural applications of
I
10 HMA accepted by commercial evaluation shall be as approved by the Engineer. Sampling
11 and testing of HMA accepted by commercial evaluation will be at the option of the Engineer.
12
I
13 The mix design will be the initial JMF for the class of HMA. The Contractor may request a
14 change in the JMF. Any adjustments to the JMF will require the approval of the Engineer
15 and may be made in accordance with this section.
1 16
17 HMA Tolerances and Adjustments
I18 19 1. Job Mix Formula Tolerances—The constituents of the mixture at the time of
acceptance shall be within tolerance. The tolerance limits will be established as
20 follows:
I 21 For Asphalt Binder and Air Voids (Va), the acceptance limits are determined by
22 adding the tolerances below to the approved JMF values. These values will also
23 be the Upper Specification Limit (USL) and Lower Specification Limit (LSL)
I 24 required in Section 1-06.2(2)D2
Property Non Statistical Evaluation Commercial Evaluation
Asphalt Binder +/ 0.5% +/-0.7%
Air Voids,Va 2.5% min. and 5.5% max N/A
I 25 For Aggregates in the mixture:
26 a. First, determine preliminary upper and lower acceptance limits by applying the
27 following tolerances to the approved JMF.
I Aggregate Percent Passing Non Statistical Commercial
Evaluation Evaluation
1",34", 1/2",and 3/8"sieves +/-6% +/-8%
No.4 sieve +/-6% +/-8%
II No. 8 Sieve +/-6% +/-8%
No.200 sieve +/ 2.0% +/-3.0%
28 b. Second, adjust the preliminary upper and lower acceptance limits determined from
I 29 step (a) the minimum amount necessary so that none of the aggregate properties
30 are outside the control points in Section 9-03.8(6). The resulting values will be the
31 upper and lower acceptance limits for aggregates, as well as the USL and LSL
I 32 required in Section 1-06.2(2)D2.
33 2. Job Mix Formula Adjustments—An adjustment to the aggregate gradation or asphalt
34 binder content of the JMF requires approval of the Engineer. Adjustments to the JMF
I 35 will only be considered if the change produces material of equal or better quality and
36 may require the development of a new mix design if the adjustment exceeds the
37 amounts listed below.
38 a. Aggregates—2 percent for the aggregate passing the 1'/2', 1", %" W %", and the
39 No. 4 sieves, 1 percent for aggregate passing the No. 8 sieve, and 0.5 percent for
40 the aggregate passing the No. 200 sieve. The adjusted JMF shall be within the
I41 range of the control points in Section 9-03.8(6).
I 2020 PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE OVERLAY PAGE 53 OF 79 SPECIAL PROVISIONS
WORK ORDER 3727 FEBRUARY 20,2020
