Structural Design Associates
Engineering Structures to Last
vicinity of a web/chord intersection(see photo#2) as is therefore deemed inadequate to
support the truss system. The bottom chord shall be reinforced with a 2x6 beam spanning
from the exterior wall of the garage to the interior party wall. The 2x6 beam shall be
sistered to the bottom chord with l0d nails at 6"on center.
3) Various components of the gable garage truss are severely charred(see photo#6).All
components charred more than an 1/8"(section reduced more than 1.375x3.375)shall be
removed and reinstated with new material.
4) The interior party wall in the garage is offset from the bottom sill plate. This offset is
likely due to the drastic increase of interior pressure during the blast. The party wall shall
be reinstated onto the bottom sill plate such that it is plumb and centered on the garaged.
All components charred more than an 1/8"on any side shall be removed and reinstated
with new material.
5) The sill plates above the party wall and garage header are severely charred. All
components charred more than an 1/8"on anyside shall be removed and reinstated with
new material.
6) In various locations the exterior drywall sheathing is damaged due to water and exposure
to the elements. In addition, the interior pressure generated from the blast may also have
damaged the exterior garage drywall(see photo#7). Once damage to the drywall has
occurred it must be replaced. The 2015 International Building Code does not allow
drywall sheathing as a lateral load resisting system for two story structures located seismic
design category D.As a result,a new lateral load resisting system design is required to
support the house. To aid in the installation, this new lateral load resisting system may be
installed on the interior side of the existing shear walls.
The items listed above shall not be used or function as a complete list of structural deficiencies.
Any other damaged structural member not listed above shall be'brought to the attention of the
engineer.
During the modifications to the framing the contractor shall ensure that all posts are fully
supported and blocked to the foundation below. All conditions described above shall be field
verified by the contractor. The construction sequence and the installation, maintenance, and
removal of temporary supports is the responsibility of the contractor. Any deviations from the
conditions described above shall be reported to the engineer.
