Provided below are responses to geotechnical items provided in the plan check review.
Comment:
1. The submittal documents for Permit No: B1805-010 include a geotechnical report prepared
by Terracon, dated February 1, 2018. Section 4.6 states that"the proposed site
development does not indicate for a retaining wall to be built", but appears to provide
criteria for the design of site retaining walls. The geotechnical engineer shall provide a letter
verifying that the design criteria provide in Section 4.6 is appropriate for the design of the
proposed site retaining walls. Additional recommendations for the design of the walls shall
be provided as needed. See IBC Sections 1803.2 and 1803.6.
Response:
Retaining walls have been added to the project since the time of the noted geotechnical report.
Design criteria provided in Section 4.6 of our report would be applicable to design of these
retaining walls. As noted in Section 4.2.3 of the report light compaction equipment should be used
within a few feet of the back of the retaining wall.
Comment:
2. Continuing with the previous comment, the retaining walls are located near existing
buildings and parking surfaces that may place lateral surcharge pressures on the walls.
Note that the wall section on page 14 schematically shows a surcharge load but does not
specify values or a influence distance behind the wall. The.geotechnical engineer shall
provide additional recommendations for surcharge loads as needed. See IBC Sections
1610.1, 1803.2, and 1803.6.
Terracon Consultants, Inc. 21905 64th Avenue West Mountlake Terrace, WA 98043
P [425] 771 3304 F [425] 771 3549 terracon.com
Geotechnical • Environmental ® Construction Materials ■ Facilities
