Ms. Lupe Sandoval
CRM Architects &Planners, Inc.
Plan Check Number: M1908-059, First Building Review
September 11, 2019
Comments
1. The construction drawings do not provide a clear and consistent separation between the hood
and the wall framing. Section 18/M-500 specifies a 3-inch "internal standoff"while Detail 14/M-
500 indicates that the hood is directly connected to the wall; Detail 14 does not appear to
indicate an internal construction that would provide an effective separation. Note that the
construction drawings for the building under Permit No. B1805-014 indicate the wall framing is
combustible construction consisting of wood studs. The hood shall be provided with a minimum
18-inch clearance to combustible materials unless reduced clearance construction is provided
per IMC Table 308.4.2; the reduced clearance shall not be less than 6 inches for an unprotected
clearance of 18 inches. The reduced clearance construction shall extend at least 18 inches in all
directions from the hood surfaces. The design shall be revised. See IMC Section 507.2.6.
2. Up-blast fans serving Type I hoods shall be installed with a restraint to allow inspection and
cleaning. Section 5/M-500 specifies a "removable bolted restraint cable"that appears to be a
latch to secure the fan in its closed position. The detail shall specify a restraint cable to limit
the swing of the fan when opened. The drawing shall be revised. See IMC 506.5.3.
3. Details 13/M-500 and 14/M-500 indicate that the hood will be supported by a combination of
connections to the adjacent wall and roof framing, respectively. See IBC Sections 107.2.1,
1603.1, 1604.1, 1604.4, and 1613.1. The following comments shall be addressed:
a. Detail 14/M-500 shows a direct connection to the wall framing providing lateral and partial
vertical support. However, the wall contains combustible construction, and therefore the
connection may not be permitted. Revised connections may be required. Seismic bracing
complying with ASCE 7-10 Section 13.6 shall be provided as needed.
b. The hood is partially suspended from the framing above using threaded rods to the roof
trusses. The trusses are spaced at 32-inches on-center per the construction drawing under
Permit No. B1805-010 and consequently may not align with the rod locations. Additional
cross-framing, such as unistrut bars, appears to be required to transfer the rod loads to the
trusses. Cross-framing shall be connected to the framing above on each side of a rod
location (i.e., cross-framing shall not cantilever). Cross-framing shall be shown in the
construction drawings if required; it shall not be added as a field-modification to the hood
installation. The design shall be revised as needed.
c. Detail 13/M-500 specifies connecting the hangers direclty to the bottom chords of the
trusses. Documentation from the manufacturer shall be submitted substantiating that the
bottom chords are designed to support the maximum concentrated load from the hoods
without providing supplemental web reinforcement. Alternatively, a detail shall be included
providing supplemental web reinforcement at the loading points. The maximum design load
shall be substantiated and shall consider concurrent loading from both hoods as applicable.
d. Calculations substantiating the vertical and lateral restraint systems, including but not
limited to the connections and truss web reinforcement, shall be submitted for review.
O3200 Cedar Street 0 425.257.8810 0 everetteps@everettwa.gov
Everett,WA 98201 425.257.8857 fax everettwa.gov/permits
Page 2 of
