2
PAR &
RECREATION
 ,D-1
•
To: Ray Stephanson,Mayor
From: Paul Kaftanski,Parks and Recreation Director
Subject: Naming of the Bruskrud Road Park Parcel
Date: April 15, 2015
Proposed Name
A final master plan for the`Bruskrud Road Park Parcel"is anticipated to be ready for•
City Council consideration in early July,2015. The project's design will soon thereafter
be completed. It is anticipated that the project, which will provide approximately 1,600
lineal feet of walking paths thrall•h a forested setting, will be open for public use in June,
2016. This is the date that the federal government, through the National Park Service,
has established as the final action to successfully complete the conversion process for the
parkland used at Thornton A. Sullivan Park for the construction of Fire Station#7.
Prior to the completion of the master planning task, the department recommends that a
name be approved for this park parcel so that it can be incorporated into the final master
plan. Staff has used the name`Bruskrud Road Park Parcel"only as an internal reference
for planning and project development purposes. The park does not have a formal name.
The proposed name submitted for consideration under the city's"naming policy"as
established by Resolution No. 6537 is the following: "South Everett Forest Preserve."
General Rationale -
The proposed name reflects the following three key points:
1) Connotes to the general public that the parkland is a"forest."In this case,it is a second
growth forest;
2)Articulates a vision that it is the city's intention to "preserve"this forested land. The
land, including an on-site wetland, provides, important ecological functions in helping to
a)maintain tree canopy cover in the city;b)maintain the forest's ability to capture
atmospheric carbon; and c)help filter stormwater from the north on its journey into Silver
Lake and south to North Creek, Lake Washington, and eventually,Puget Sound; and
3) Situated less than a half mile north of 112t St SE and half mile south of the Everett
Mall, the name identifies that its location is in fact,in"South Everett."
r,1Tv /TQCTT • Rivri • rr-vAl tt IA/A QR'XV1 • (:L9 \ 2 )7_231N) • Fax (d251 257-R:325
