November 2,2005
In the years ahead,Everett's population will become increasingly divs.se
as we welcome new residents into our community. Therefore,it is
impudent that we make the effort to embrace a variety of cultures and
assure that our educational and economic environments are universally
inclusive and provide opportunities for everyone.
Last year I appointed several community members, representing a wide
cross-section of interests,to the Mayors Advisory on Diversity. The
mission of the Advisory is to identify and pdodtize community concerns on
diversity issues and to offer recommendations regarding a work plan that
could be implemented ut the city govemment level. The Advisory
members have prod's ced draft recommendations relating to the areas of
education,economic development,law and justice coil liberties,children
add families,and communicatl^'m end outreach.This input,together with
the Vision Team's work, will be invaluable as we determine how to apply
the City's resources most effectively to these issues.
IN CLOSING
I thank our Everett City Council Members for your leadership and
commitment to o city Through this budget process. I also want to
recognize City employes for their efforts to controlcosts and maintain
existing service levels and to thank our many volunteers who give so
generously of their time and talents to the community.Everett is a better
place as a result.
We are poised for great things. While there is much work to be done and
obstacles yet to overcome,I believe Everett's best years are just ahead.
Respectfully submitted,
Ray Stephenson
Mayor
Council Member Stonecipher stated that a streamlined version of the
2006 proposed budget will be made available to the public.
