July 1.2009
COUNCIL
Council Member Roberts stated that the Washington State Aviation
Planning Counsel issued Its report consistent with the statute that created
the counsel which looks at Washington State's aviation needs for general
and commercial aviation for the next 20 years. He remarked that it
recommends that airports such as Paine Field have significant additional
capacity in that time frame.
He reported that he and Council Member Affholter attended the
Association of Washington Cities'Conference where they,on behalf of
the city, received the Governor's Smart Growth Award for its established
downtown development standards. He presented it to Mayor Stephenson.
Council Member Olson stated that two weeks ago the council took action
authorizing the Mayor to sign a contract for red light video surveillance
cameras.
Since that time a class action lawsuit has been fled against
municipalities which seeks to reduce fines. He suggested that the city
step back and look at the implications of the lawsuit before they proceed.
City Attorney Iles remarked that the Mayor has asked him to review the
docand make a recommendation to him prior to any execution of the
uent.
Council Member Olson stated that he was pleased to get the very detailed
reports from staff regarding the Collins Building and the care of the
Planning Director and the Building Official In reviewing the matter. He
expressed disappointment that it came back so quickly and was not
brought back to the public tonight. He remarked that in light of the time
constraints.he felt that it was appropriate for this issue to be brought up
over the dais.
Additional discussion ensued.
192
