2IMMD...;UNSUL•FMSCA PArTNERSHIP .,.t.,
Mr.Tony Lee Page 2
September 4,2002
Accessibility:
• General Note regarding items 4A and rooms B352: We have made all of the
required ADA modifications as requested. ADA code requirements are designed
to address the general day-to-day accessibility challenges of disabled people.
Unfortunately they do not take into account the verity of operations that occur
within a hospital, such as the requirements and methods of care for an acute-care
patient. The original toilet and shower room layouts allowed for easier and safer
patient assistance than the current ADA approved layouts Given this plus the
constraints of working within the confines of an existing structure, and fully
operating hospital,it seems reasonable that some code leniency could be
considered by the City of Everett for the unique circumstances of this project.
1. Showers C326,B352&B353: Fold down bench has been relocated. See A23B&A23C.
2. Shower Rooms C326,B352,&B353: Controls have been relocated as requested.See
A2.3B,A2.3C,M238&M23C.
4. Grab bars:
a. A cut sheet for the fold down grab-bar(Bobrick model NB-4998)has been
attached to this response for your review. At Accessible rooms C332&C334 the
walls have been extended to allow for a standard 54"grab bar.
In order to reduce the impact of construction on the surgery areas at Level 2C,
the Accessible Rooms have been changed to rooms C332&C334. By making this
change all plumbing modifications can be made from the third floor without the
need to open the Level 2(Operating Room)ceilings.
b. A dimension to the centerline of the U.C.toilets has been added to the drawings.
See A23B&A23C.
5. Letter from Providence Hospital is to be provided under separate cover.
6. Water closet clearance at B352,&B353:
• At room B352 existing structural constraints prohibit us from relocating this water
closet. This room has a "roll-in"shower with a sloped floor composed of thickset
tile set over a waterproof membrane. This is in lieu of a pre-manufactured shower
base.The"roll-in"allows a wheel chair to smoothly roll from the main toilet room
floor into the shower without having to be lifted over a small ledge or bulkhead.
The original design had a half high wall, which is used to control over-spray from
the shower while allowing a nurse to assist the patient. To accommodate the ADA
clearance requirements the low shower wall has been deleted. PEMC will now do
the best they can with a curtain at this location. See drawing A23B
• At room B353 the water closet has been relocated to accommodate the 5'-0"clear
area requirement. See drawing A23B
zl7
