Deb Williams
From. Jessica Fleming <jfleming@snocopda.org>
Sent: Wednesday, March 03, 2021 12:55 PM
To: DL-Council
Subject: NO on CB 2102-06
Hello,
CB 2102-06 is inhumane and wrong. We must not criminalize a person's simple existence. Every day people remain
u nhoused, this Council fails its community. Renaming the significant inequality in this community ' street -level social
issues" is an abstraction that obscures the real humanity of the unhoused people living their daily lives in Everett.
Displacing people is not the solution. Increasing law enforcement and criminal justice involvement in problems they are
n ot equipped or designed to manage or solve is not the solution. Other cities have dealt with this issue with some
success, and displacement and criminalization of unhoused people and the people who help them has never solved this
problem anywhere. This proposed ordinance is bad wallpaper over a serious problem. It's easy and it might make
certain people feel better in the short-term, but it does nothing to address the real issues underneath. This ordinance
will not help get people into good and sustainable housing and will create other problems and expenses down the line.
If the Council does not want people in Everett to feel ' unwelcome" as the proposed ordinance suggests, build an
e mpathetic community that takes good care of the vulnerable. The money and time that enforcing CB 2102-06 would
cost would instead be much better spent on working with organizations already working with unhoused people here and
e lsewhere to find a way to provide humane, safe, and sustainable housing to all people in Everett that need it.
Sincerely,
Jessica Fleming
Attorney
Snohomish County Public Defender Association
2722 Colby Avenue, Suite 200
Everett, WA 98201
425-212-2675
360-206-9786
ifleming(a1,snocopda. org
Disclaimer
This message contains confidential information and is intended only for the individual named.
