CB 2102-06
I am a resident of Seattle, and I want to voice my direct disapproval of and disappointment in Ord. CB 2102-06.
Prohibiting sitting and lying, and distributing goods around Smith Avenue is very thinly veiled violent action against the
area's houseless community.
There is hardly anything, anyone, these neighbors can rely on as it is. And now, in a global pandemic, you want to take
away their ability to rely on the ground, public seating, public space, to hold their bodies in a moment of rest? This is
nothing short of cruelty. It's as if this ordinance was written up with the sole intent of looking busy while spending
taxpayers' dollars to attack our most vulnerable neighbors.
Additionally, this ordinance is as illogical as it is inhumane. If you don't want to see houseless people on the street, then
help them. If you don't want community members to give aid to houseless people, then you do it. What you will NOT do,
is leave our houseless neighbors to simply suffer and waste away and think that the community you serve won't notice.
If you won't hold yourselves accountable, then we will.
If you took the time to truly engage in community and see what is happening in the greater Seattle area as community
members instead of individuals, you would see that this ordinance is not what we need. This ordinance is inhumane and
to act on it would be entirely lacking in compassion and empathy for the public that you serve. Get rid of this ordinance
if you want us to still believe you have any humanity.
Regards,
Avril Lum
1
