r
Proposed Everett Hotel Property Environmental Site Characterization and
Everett, Washington Remediation Recommendations
surface and the first sample, which was collected at a depth of approximately 2.5 feet. A
weathered till horizon was not encountered at the locations of borings EB-5, EB-6, EB-9, and
EB-10. At the locations of borings EB-8 and EB-11, the till extended to depths of
approximately 58 feet and 40.5 feet, respectively. In the other borings where the lodgement
till was encountered, the till extended beyond the maximum depths explored of approximately
18.5 to 59 feet.
Vashon Advance Outwash
Sediments encountered below the fill at the location of exploration boring EB-1 generally
consisted of medium dense to very dense sand with variable silt and gravel content and hard,
sandy silt with minor gravel content. Similar sediments were encountered below the till at the
locations of borings EB-8 and EB-11. We interpret these sediments to be representative of
Vashon advance outwash. The Vashon advance outwash stratigraphically underlies the Vashon
lodgement till and was deposited by meltwater streams that emanated from the advancing
glacial ice during Vashon time. The high relative density characteristic of the Vashon advance
outwash is due to consolidation by the glacial ice that overran these sediments subsequent to
their deposition. The Vashon advance outwash sediments extended beyond the maximum
depths explored in borings EB-1, EB-8, and EB-11 of approximately 29 feet, 59 feet, and 53.5
feet, respectively.
Review of the regional geologic map titled Distribution and Description of the Geologic Units
in the Everett Quadrangle, Washington by James Minard (1981) indicates that the area of the
I subject site is underlain by Vashon lodgement till with Vashon advance outwash sediments
exposed at the ground surface several blocks to both the east and west. Our interpretation of
the sediments encountered in our explorations is in general agreement with the regional
geologic map.
1.3.2 Hydrology
Ground water seepage was encountered at the time of drilling near the base of the fill in
1 exploration boring EB-1 at a depth of approximately 12.5 feet. The water at this location
appeared to be perched within the fill. The upper portion of the underlying advance outwash
was unsaturated, but an additional zone of perched ground water was encountered deeper
within the outwash. This additional ground water was present near the base of a stratum of
clean, fine sand and was perched atop an underlying layer of silt. Exploration boring EB-1
was completed as a monitoring well to allow measurement of the static ground water level and
to allow collection of ground water samples for laboratory analysis. A static ground water
level of 1J9:G-`fee low ground surface was measured in the welt 3 days after well completion:"
INr o round water was observed during drilling of boring EB-6; however, after drilling was
completed and the auger was removed from the boring, several niches of water were observed
at the bottom of the boring. At the time that the ground water was observed, the boring had
August 24, 2009 ASSOCIATED EARTH SCIENCES, INC.
TJP/tb-KV090168A5-Projects120090168IKVIWP Page 4
