•
Bruce S. MacVeigh, P.E.
Civil Engineer/Small Site Geotechnical
14245 59th Ave. S.
Tukwila, WA 98168
Cell Ph: 206-571-8794
September 16, 2019
Subject: Seismic Restraint- Two New Kitchen Hoods, Pizza Hut, 10121
Evergreen Way, Suite 23, Everett, WA 98204
General,
The existing building will receive new/upgraded roof-mounted restaurant
related units and two new interior kitchen hoods. The two new hoods, 11-
foot wide and 3-foot wide, are supported internally by new post supported
4" x 8" cross overhead beams. Beam posting is to the tenant space side
wall and a new interior front to back wall. The interior wall may be
OSB/plywood sheathed for general lateral post stability.
Comments/Evaluation Results.
As noted, the beams supporting the hoods are tied-in directly to internal
walls. While portions of the hoods are hung from suspending rods, they
are also tied-in to their adjacent walls.
Estimating seismic loading due to the dead weight of the hoods is as
follows. The larger 11-foot hood had a weight of 619 pounds. Add 15
percent for miscellaneous ducting, etc. resulting in a weight of 712
pounds. For a reasonable estimate for the lateral seismic loading, use 20
percent of dead weight, or about 143 pounds. With wall restraint, the
relevant loading is transverse to the hood location.
Based on normal construction practice, the incidental normal wall
connections provide more than the 143 pounds capacity.
Summary.
Normal hood wall connection, even minimal, is sufficient to provide
adequate seismic restraint. No formal detailing isnecessary for this
feature of hood installation.
Note the smaller hood has the same evaluatio , 1 A e restraint
conclusio s S.M.f,t,
rifiti ce S.
