Steward PE 11714 Expires 8/20/2020 <br />24738 SE Mirrormont Drive Issaquah, WA 98027 <br />Email Iesteward@hotmail.com phone 425-765-9965 <br />Using Table R602.10.1 of IRC <br />The American Plywood Association tested walls with 4 foot high opening with normal stud height of 10 <br />feet or less did not have significant drop off of Shear strength. <br />Looking at the West wall consists of the 40 foot west wall of the addition which has 17 feet of full height <br />opening which gives 57.5 percent of wall length which qualifies as a braced wall. The Table R602.10.1 <br />Shows 60 percent. This falls short about 2.5 percent. However parallel to this 17.5 feet is a interior <br />braced wall which compensates. The wind force on this is not great as the previous analysis shows. <br />The east wall has 33 feet of opening, however only 15 feet of them are near full height. Therefore the <br />percentage is 15/85= 18 percent. Again the wind forces are small on the long walls. <br />The walls running East and West are shorter and subject to greater unit shear stresses per unit of length. <br />The length of the braced walls in the east west direction exceeds 60 percent. <br />The 2"d story walls are subject to less wind stress than the first floor. The critical part of this is the <br />connection from the roof trusses to the top plate of the second floor stud walls.
