The original project engineer. Danny R. Parrent, PE was notified of our involvement with the
project. This letter shall be accompanied with the issued plans and calculation package.
The building official comments were reviewed prior to engineering the project. The following is our
response to those comments:
Structural
1. Residential deck loading was used for the lateral, gravity, and foundation design. The loading is
reported on S 1.0 of the plans and page 2 of the structural calculations.
2. Cantilever timber posts were used to resist lateral loads. A seismic response value of 1.25 was
used. See calculation page 5. Combined normal and shear stresses were considered in the post
design. See calculation pages 17-20.
3. The deck framing was designed with consideration of lateral and gravity loading. A hot tub will
not be used on the deck. Verbiage clarifying the hot tub loading is provided on drawing S 1.3,
'Note#3'.
4. The deck framing was designed with consideration of lateral and gravity loading. A hot tub will
not be used on the deck. Verbiage clarifying the hot tub loading is provided on drawing S 1.3,
'Note#3'.
5. Deck canopy framing provided on S 1.3. Rafters to be spaced at 24"on center.
6. Comment not applicable with submittal from Structural Design Associates,
7. The deck is designed to be self-supported. A seismic separation gap is specified on the plans. The
design is intended to not transfer loads to the existing house. Refer to S 1.2-S 1.3 for seismic
separation gap specification.
8. See detail 1/S5.0 for guard post connection and calculations.
9. A redundancy factor, rho of 1,3, is applied to the seismic loads applied to the cantilevered timber
posts. See calculation pages 2-3.
Please contact this office if you have any questions regarding this letter.
Sincerely, . COVI , r`.,
( c.,„)._1...----Th
A.
