are washed sand or crushed gravel. Material unsuited for backfill <br /> in traffic areas are clay, peat, muck and materials of like nature. <br /> In clay soil the addition of water shall be limited only to that <br /> needed for increasing the density of the backfill material. As soon <br /> as any such sewer or drain is completed the applicant shall immedi- <br /> ately restore and maintain all streets, sidewalks, parking strips and <br /> other public areas disturbed or altered in the course of any side <br /> sewer or drainage work to the original surface condition and, in the <br /> event the applicant fails to immediately restore the area to its orig- <br /> inal condition the City Engineer shall make such restoration and charge <br /> the cost thereof to the applicant who shall, upon receiving written <br /> notice of the amount, make immediate payments thereof to the City <br /> Treasurer. All sewer trenches which have settled due to inadequate <br /> backfilling operations shall be immediately restored by applicant and <br /> he shall at all times remain liable therefor. All work within the <br /> limits of any street or alley must be prosecuted to completion with <br /> due diligence, and if, in the judgment of the inspector, any excavation <br /> is left open beyond a reasonable time he shall cause the same to be <br /> filled and the street or alley restored forthwith, and any cost in- <br /> curred in such work shall be charged to the sewer contractor in <br /> charge of such work, and must be paid for before he shall receive <br /> any further permit. If any work done in pursuance of permit granted <br /> as heretofore prescribed be not constructed and completed in accord- <br /> ance with the plan filed, and to the acceptance of the inspector, and <br /> the licensed contractor shall refuse to properly construct and com- <br /> plete said work, notice thereof shall be given to the owner of the <br /> property for whom said work is being done and the City Engineer shall <br /> proceed to complete and connect said sewer in a proper manner, and the <br /> full cost of such work and materials necessary therefor shall be charged <br /> and become a lien against said property and shall be collected in the <br /> 9. <br />
