The ducts for the exhaust fans penetrate the floor assemblies throughout the building.
The keynotes specify that the ducts shall be installed without fire dampers per IBC
Section 717.6.1 Exceptions 1 through 5. The exception requirements shall be listed in
the keynotes similar to the requirements for wall penetrations. See Keynote 4/M2.02
as an example. See IBC Section 107.2.1.
RENSCH RESPONSE:Please see updated plans:M2.01,M2.02,M2.03,M2.04,and M2.05. I updated Key
Note#2 on each sheet to include specific requirements from IBC 717.6.1.
2. The project includes 4-inch ducts penetrating through dwelling walls at multiple
locations throughout the building. Several locations are being installed per IBC Section
717.5.4 Exception 3. See Keynote 4 on Sheet M2.02 for an example. See IBC Section
420.2. The duct penetration at the following additional locations shall include
keynotes specify similar construction:
a. Sheet M2.01:EF-1A and WH-1 ducts through all walls.
b. Sheet M2.02:EF-1B and EF-1B ducts through shaft(i.e.,chase)walls.
RENSCH RESPONSE:On M2.01,EF-1A and WHF-1 do not penetrate dwelling unit walls(they penetrate
non-fire-resistance rated walls within the dwelling unit, but they do not penetrate any fire-resistance
rated walls separating the dwelling unit from the corridor):They penetrate down through mezzanine
floor into commercial tenant space(which is one continuous unpartitioned space). I have updated key
note#2 on M2.01 to indicate requirements for these penetrations.
On M2.02,EF-1B and EF-1C do not penetrate any dwelling unit walls(they penetrate non-fire-resistance
rated walls within the dwelling unit, but they do not penetrate any fire-resistance rated walls separating
the dwelling unit from the corridor):They penetrate down through a non-fire-resistance rated wall
"architectural chase"which is intended to satisfy one of the requirements to the exceptions in IBC
717.6.1(contained and located within a cavity of a wall). I have updated key note#2 on M2.02 to
indicate requirements for these penetrations. I also clarified the call-out to the"architectural chase"to
indicate it is non-fire-resistance rated.
//
