• S
Page 2
3. The EF-1B and EF-1C ducts on Sheet M2.02 pass down through the floor assembly to
the First story. The duct penetration through the floor shall be constructed per IBC
Section 717.6.1.
RENSCH RESPONSE:I updated Key Note#2 on M2.02 to include specific requirements from IBC 717.6.1.
4. The ducts serving exhaust fans on Sheets M2.03 through M2.05 are required to be
concealed in walls per IBC Section 717.6.1 Exception 1,as stated in Keynote 2.
However, the keynote is only specified where each duct originates. The keynote is not
specified for the ducts passing through the Fourth and Fifth stories on Sheets M2.04
and M2.05,respectively. The plans do not appear to show walls at the duct locations.
The drawings should be revised to clarify how this requirement will be satisfied. See
IBC Section 107.2.1.
RENSCH RESPONSE:Please see updated plans:M2.04 and M2.05. I added key note#2 to each duct
passing through the 4th and 5th floors. I added walls around each group of ducts with a call-out indicating
a non-fire-resistance rated chase to satisfy the requirement in the exception to 717.6.1 where the ducts
must be contained and located within a cavity of a wall.
5. The following comments should be addressed for the EF-1D and EF-1E ducts, and dryer
ducts EH-2A through EH-2D,on Sheet M2.02:
a. The ducts should be concealed in soffits per Keynote 1. See IBC Section
107.2.1.
b. The ducts are closely-spaced and penetrating through a structural wall. It
appears the wall may be constructed of unreinforced masonry. A detail for
the penetrations, including but not limited to spacing requirements, opening
edge distanced, and notes to avoid cutting steel reinforcement where present,
shall be included in the drawings. Structural calculations may be required to
substantiating that the penetrations do not impair the load-carrying capacity
of the wall. See IBC Sections 107.2.1 and IEBC Sections 807.4 and 807.5.
c. The ducts on Sheet M2.01 appear to penetrate the west exterior wall at an
existing window opening. The construction of the penetrations should be
clarified. A detail should be included as needed. If the penetrations occur
through the existing structural systems, additional detailing and calculations
may be required. See IBC Sections 107.2.1 and IEBCSections 807.4 and 807.5.
RENSCH RESPONSE:The ducts passing through the corridor are called out appropriately in key note#4 on
M2.02 as being concealed above a ceiling(as required by IBC 717.5.4 Exception#3,condition#4).
The dryer exhaust ducts are not required to be in a soffit(they are individually vented, not classified as
Type 2 dryers).
All exterior wall terminations occur at infills of pre-existing windows(no structural details needed). The
architect has been made aware of the requirements we talked about regarding fire-resistance ratings of
the infilled windows;they will be responsible for ensuring all code requirements from the IBC are
adhered to.
