This causes increased flow in the side sewer, and when the Backwater Valve is shut during a surcharge event the downspouts water will back up into the floor drains and flood that area. Solution (A): Disconnect downspout, extend 3' or more from foundation, and discharge to splash block. As-Built of Sewer and Plumbing See attached drawing. Comments • All down spouts that are connected to the side sewer could be disconnected and routed to splash blocks so that less flow is in the side sewer causing potential surcharge events. Where downspouts are routed to splash blocks the ground surface should be sloped away from the house. • Installing a grinder pump would provide increased protection from sewer backups beyond the protection a backwater valve can provide. • Owner has already disconnected most of the gutter lines. • After back water valve is installed floor drains will have nowhere to go if the city sewer is backed up. Inside by water heater should not be a problem but driveway will allow rain water in garage if not pumped away.
