• <br /> CHAPTER IV <br /> VEAI0LE EQUIP1d1ENT <br /> Section 30: BPAKE REQUIhE TENTS. <br /> (a) Every motor vehicle, other than a motorcycle, shall <br /> be equipped with brakes adequate to control the movement of and to <br /> stop ana to hold such venicle, including two separate means of <br /> applying such brakes, each of which means shall be effective to apply <br /> the brakes to at least two (2) wheels. If these two (2) separate <br /> means of applying the brakes are connected in any way, they shall be <br /> so constructed that the failure of any one part of the operating <br /> mechanism shall not leave the motor vehicle without brakes on at <br /> Least two (2) wheels on the sane axle. The separate means of apply- <br /> ing such brakes shall be approved by the estate Commission on <br /> Eqi ipment. <br /> (b) Every motorcycle and bicycle shall be equipped with <br /> at least one (1) friction brake, which may be operated by hand or <br /> foot. <br /> (c) Every trailer or semi-trailer of a gross weight, <br /> including load, of two thousand (2000) pounds or more shall be <br /> equipped with brakes adequate to control the movements of and to stop <br /> and to hold such vehicle, and so designed as to be applied by the <br /> driver of the towing motor vehicle from its cab. <br /> (d) The service brakes upon any vehicle or combination <br /> of vehicles shall be capable of bringing such vehicle or combination <br /> of vehicles to a complete stop at a rate of deceleration equivalent <br /> to a stop within thirty-five (35) feet from a speed of twenty (20) <br /> miles per hour when upon dry asphalt or concrete pavement the surface <br /> of which is free from loose material and the grade of which does not <br /> exceed one (1) per cent; Provided, That under such conditions the <br /> service brake upon any motor vehicle equipped with service brakes <br /> upon one axle only, when the use of such vehicle is permitted under <br /> the provisions of this ordinance, shall be capable of bringing such <br /> motor vehicle to a complete stop at a rate of deceleration equivalent <br /> to a stop within forty-five (45) feet. All braking distances and <br /> rates of deceleration specified in this section shall apply to all <br /> vehicles mentioned, whether such vehicles ere not loaded or are <br /> loaded to the maximum capacity permitted by law. <br /> (e) All brakes shall be maintained in good working order <br /> and shall be so adjusted as to operate as equally as practicable with <br /> respect to the wheels on opposite sides of the vehicle. It shall be <br /> unlawful to operate any vehicle with the brakes out of adjustment to <br /> the extent that the unequal application between opposite sides of the <br /> vehicle will cause the vehicle to swerve, pull to the side, or other- <br /> wise ?ffect the operator ' s control. <br /> (f) The means of applying the brakes other than the <br /> service or foot brake shall be capable of holding any motor vehicle <br /> or combination of vehicles stationary upon any plus or minus grade <br /> upon which the same is to operate and in any event upon a plus or <br /> minus grade of at least five (5) per cent. <br /> -14- <br />
