At approximately 5:40 pm Thursday August 29, 2013 the Broadway KFC/Long Johns
parking lot and the drive-thru lane filled up with water, black water with visible feces
quickly began coming up all floor drains, and restroom toilets. As the sewage water rose
and covered the entire restaurant including our walk-in refrigerators and freezer, our
office and went into our safe-We immediately closed the restaurant. Not only was our
entire restaurant flooded with sewage but the entire south side of our property—
including our Drive-thru lane and pad, washing the bark off our landscaping. While the
entire restaurant was flooded, all of our floor surfaces are tile and we have tile coving,
the water did not go above the tile coving. The street to the east of the restaurant
(Broadway) also filled with water.
On staff was Sheila Cunanan, the restaurant general manager, Charanjit Toor the
assistant, team members, Kyle Dorrough, Steven McKinney, Israel Rivas and Douglas
Robledo. A city crew arrived with a pump truck and begin pumping our lot while this
was occurring Debbie Gandrud the Area Coach for the restaurant spoke the city tech on
site by phone and he told her to call Everett City Risk Management at 425-257-7000 in
the morning. Once the city came with a pump truck and began pumping the water from
the street the black water coming into the restaurant stopped.
Sheila sent most her staff home except for and begin throwing away all of the prepared
food and trying to squeeze the sewage water back into the drains. Sheila kept Israel
and Douglas to help her close. Debbie Gandrud the Area Coach for the restaurant
called Washington Water Damage & Cleaning Services a professional company to
come in and clean and sanitize the restaurant. Sheila completed the manager closing
duties for the restaurant; drawer counts, deposit and system close and left the
restaurant at approximately 10:30 PM.
We had food prepped for our dinner rush-this food was discarded, all open
products/paper goods on the lower shelves were checked and anything in an open
package was discarded. All cases were inspected for any visible sign of contamination,
if evident discarded,
We had a scheduled delivery of food and paper products at 9:00PM Thursday, August
29, 2013 which we diverted to another of our locations.
Debbie Gandrud called Washington Water Damage and Cleaning Services (425-252-
7775)they specialize in cleaning up after this type of incident. They arrived at the
restaurant at 10:00PM and cleaned until about 3:30AM. Debbie stayed at the
restaurant with the cleaning team as the restaurant was not secure(all outside doors
were open) and locked up and secured the restaurant when they finished. They
cleaned up all the water, applied a sanitizing agent and cleaned with hot water. They
moved all of the chairs and booths in the lobby and cleaned the entire area with the
sanitizing agent. They wiped the legs and feet of all chairs, booths and tables.
Equipment in our kitchen area was moved and the entire floor cleaned, legs to
1
