2 of 11

2. Equipment required:
a. Nitrile gloves
b. Seven (7) two (2)-liter high-density polyethylene (HDPE) sample containers
c. Sharpie pens, labels for sample containers
d. Chain-of-Custody form
e. Pond map showing designated sample sites
f. Sludge sampler (8-10 feet long)
g. Garmin Chartplotter
h. Square D key
i. Life jackets
j. Paddles
k. Barge, bio boat, or dinghy
3. Time to complete: 2-4 hours

E. Procedure
1. Sample collection occurs tri-annually in the Aeration cells and Recirculation Channel, and
annually in the Oxidation Pond, plus an independent collection for VAR testing between 45-60
days prior to a dredging event.
2. AC-2 is divided into 14 discrete sampling sections (A-N). Samples are collected from areas A-G
on the first sampling week of the quarter, and from sites H-N on the second sampling week of
the quarter. The Recirculation Channel is divided into 7 discrete sampling sections (S-U, and W-
Z), and all Recirculation quarterly samples can be collected in a single week. The Oxidation Pond
is divided into 18 discrete sampling sections (A-R). Samples are collected from areas L-R on the
first sampling week of the year, from sites E-K on the second sampling week of the year, and
from sites A-D, on the third sampling week of the year. This allows the Biosolids Area Lead to
track and trend analyte values in each area over time.
3. For VAR testing, collect one core from each of the discrete sampling sections into individual
pre-labeled bottles. For AC-2, collect 14 discrete samples, A-N. For the Oxidation Pond, collect 7
discrete samples, L-R. For the Recirculation Channel, collect 7 discrete samples, S-U and W-Z.
Deliver to the lab for appropriate compositing and analysis.
4. A maximum of seven discrete sections can be sampled on a given day due to lab capacity
constraints.
5. Samples need to be collected on a Monday or Tuesday due to lab staffing and shipping
constraints.
6. Gather Equipment and Supplies per Section D. Sampling supplies are stored in the Everett
Environmental Lab and in the Operations tool corner in Stage III. If needed, the dinghy is stored
on the asphalt pad west of the Primaries.
7. Label and date the lab sample containers before collecting the samples.
8. Determine which vessel will be needed for sampling. The barge is used for sampling AC-2, the
bio boat is used for sampling the Oxidation Pond, and either the barge, if available, the bio
boat, or the dinghy can be used for sampling in the Recirculation Channel.
a. Prepare the barge for AC-2.
