3 of 11

i. Notify Day Operator: “Turning off brush aerators 65 and 66 for biosolids sampling.”
Key off brush aerators 65 and 66 at the end of center dike using the Square D key.
Note: Do not open circuit breakers.
ii. Disconnect the barge from shore power. Gently place the battery charging cord on the
dock, or in a location that prevents inadvertently being dropped into the water.
iii. Remove the rain cover from the captain’s console.
iv. Place all three (3) battery power switches on the left-hand side, beneath the steering
wheel, in the on position.
v. Tilt the motors down until they are vertical. Note: It is possible to tilt the motors down
beyond the vertical position. Doing so increases the power demand, thereby
increasing the likelihood of tripping a circuit breaker, and decreasing the available
battery life.
vi. Key on the motors using the keys located in the ignition beneath the throttle control
levers on the right-hand side of the steering wheel.
i. With one operator behind the wheel, have the other operator undo the mooring
ropes from the barge and leave on the dock, taking care not to step off the barge once
it is loosed from the dock.
b. Prepare the bio boat for the Oxidation Pond.
i. Hitch the bio boat to a four-wheel drive vehicle. Note: two operators are required
when attaching and/or backing trailers.
ii. Ensure the boat plug is in place and secure.
iii. Ensure the trim on the Mud Buddy motor is secured in the up position using the motor
support peg on the right-hand side (when facing the motor from behind the boat).
iv. Check the fuel level on the boat gas can in the bio boat.
v. Attach the boat gas can to the fuel line.
vi. Pump the primer bulb until the bulb feels firm.
vii. Launch the boat.
a) Drive north on west dike and turn east on center dike. Pull past the boat laun ch,
put the vehicle in four-wheel drive, and back the boat down the center of the
ramp. Note: A spotter is recommended to aid in centering the trailer on the ramp
when backing. Additional note: The ramp drops off rather steeply on the west
edge, which makes it difficult to launch/load the bio boat.
b) Stop backing when the boat is about halfway in the water.
c) Have one member of the sampling team get in the boat with their life jacket on.
d) Back the boat the rest of the way in the water, until the boat is floating on the
water and not resting on the trailer. Note: Do not back the vehicle into the water
past the exhaust pipe.
e) The team member on the boat should raise the motor slightly, release the pin,
then trim the motor down so that the propeller guard is even with the water
surface.
f) The team member on the boat then releases both hooks securing the boat to the
trailer.
g) The team member on the boat then starts the engine and backs off the trailer.
