8. 6 sample jars (250 mL clear glass wide-mouth jars with Teflon-lined lid)
9. 6 Sample labels
10. Chain of custody form (COC) and pen
F. Procedures
1. Schedule sampling event
I. Biosolids Program Manager (Hanna Lintukorpi as of July 2022) will schedule
sampling event with IPT and EEL
II. Schedule sampling event
a) Sampling is ideal after a period of dry weather when water table is more than
a foot down to minimize impacts of surface water on sampling
III. Obtain COC from Biosolids Program Manager (Hanna Lintukorpi as of July 2022)
IV. Prelog samples and obtain sample labels
V. Request soil pH analysis upon return to EEL (must be completed on collection day)
2. Prepare equipment and supplies
I. Load equipment from Section E into sampling vehicle
3. Collect samples
I. Find sample location from the map
a) Skip sample site if water table is less than one foot from surface and make
note on the map
II. Remove organic matter (grass, roots, sticks, etc.) surrounding sample site
III. Dig a hole deeper than the organic layer one foot deep
IV. Collect two consistently sized samples from each site (about two 1/2 cups each)
V. Remove any remaining organic material (roots, leaves, worms, etc.)
VI. Place each sample in a separate bucket
a) When bucket becomes too heavy to carry, store bucket in sample vehicle and
use another bucket to collect remaining samples
VII. Mark off sample location on map after collecting sample (or note reason if
skipped)
VIII. After all 25 sites for a field have been sampled, composite the soil samples in each
bucket by mixing with spoon, breaking up chunks until smaller than marble -size
IX. Fill six jars with sample (three for Composite 1, three for Composite 2)
4. Deliver samples to EEL
I. Deliver COC to EEL (Michele Johnson as of July 2022 or other EEL staff)
II. Confirm soil pH analysis will be completed same day
5. Follow-up with Biosolids Program Manager (Hanna Lintukorpi as of July 2022)
I. Notify Biosolids Program Manager that sampling was completed, send marked
map and copy of COC, and describe site conditions and any other sampling notes.
6. Clean equipment
I. Clean stainless-steel bowl and spoon and buckets
a) Scrub with hot soapy water
b) Rinse with hot water
