2.11 SPRINKLER IRRIGATION SYSTEMS
The contractor must establish appropriate time intervals for each valve zone in the irrigation system and
shall be responsible for making all adjustments necessary during the operating season. Irrigation systems
must operate only during the evening hours. Daytime operation is permitted only when testing the
system, after fertilizer application, for new installations, or during extreme temperatures. The contractor
must keep a log of controller time settings for each system and update the log with each controller
adjustment.
Services to sprinkler irrigation systems include:
• Monitor, maintain, and adjust systems to ensure they remain efficient and effective.
• Check time, valves, and sprinklers to ensure efficient and effective irrigation.
• Remove any vegetation, sod, or debris affecting head performance from all zones.
• Remove any vegetation, sod, or debris affecting access to valves, and reset or raise valve boxes.
• Start-up. This consists of charging the system, inspecting all heads, coverage, and lines.
• Inspection of system and all heads.
• Adjust irrigation system and clocks during the growing season.
• Clean and adjust head, nozzles, and valves as required.
• Winterizing. This consists of vacating all water from the systems using an air compressor,
adjusting or setting all valves and back flow prevention devices for winterization per the
manufacturer's recommendations. The system then must be deactivated prior to frost.
2.12 INSECT, DISEASE CONTROL, AND WEED CONTROL FERTILIZATION
For environmental protection, chemical means will be applied only when necessary, using only City of
Everett and WSDA approved materials.
2.13 FERTILIZER
Add a slow -release fertilizer once a year in the spring to all plants and trees. The fertilizer needs to be for
woody ornamentals and last for the complete growing season. An example of acceptable fertilizer would
be Osmocote 8-9 month slow release for wood shrubs.
2.14 HARD SURFACES
The entrance drives, sidewalks, curbs, and other hard surfaces will be kept free of leaves, moss, litter,
trash, or garbage. The use of power blowers is acceptable; however, the debris will be picked up or swept
up and not blown onto adjacent property, street surfaces, or planting beds. Undesirable vegetation in
sidewalks, curbs, and other hard surfaces shall receive an approved herbicide application, mechanically
removed (e.g. pulled), treated with vinegar (weeds) or industrial strength outdoor bleach (moss control
mixed 50% water: 50% bleach) and be removed.
The contractor shall provide twenty-four (24) hours advance notice to the Project Manager before making
any applications. Authorization to proceed will be given by the Project Manager once the site has been
