However, the submitted documents are not
sufficiently developed for us to perform a comprehensive review at this time.
Revised construction-level documents should be submitted for review. Two complete sets of the revised
drawings should be submitted to replace the previously submitted drawing sets. Preliminary comments are
provided below to assist in revising the drawings, but these are not intended to provide a comprehensive
review. The resubmittal documents should include an itemized response letter clarifying how the review
comments below have been addressed.
Intake Review Comments:
1. The submitted drawings consist of excerpted architectural sheets from Building Permit No. B2107-001 and
the manufacturer's generic shop drawings for the hood system. Project specific mechanical drawings
showing the proposed location of the hood system and other information as required (e.g., roof framing,
installation details, etc.) should be submitted for review. See IBC Section 107.2.1.
2. The anticipated location of the hood system appears to be against an interior wall of unknown
construction. The hood should be provided with a minimum 18-inch clearance to combustible
materials. The note in the "Section Plan Detail" on Sheet 2-of-2 regarding the required clearance is not
adequate. Alternative, reduced clearances, including the sides and top, should be substantiated with
details per IMC Section 308.4.2. See IMC Section 507.2.6.
3. The proposed hood weighs more than 20 lb and is suspended from the framing above. Details for the
connection of the hood to the structure are required; the details provided in the manufacturer's drawings
are not adequate. The hood shall be provided with lateral bracing per ASCE 7-10 Section
13.6. Alternatively, the hood may be braced by a direct connection to the adjacent wall provided that the
minimum 18-inch clearance is maintained. See IBC Sections 107.2.1, 1604.1 and 1613.1.
4. The duct is provided with fire wrap at the interior of the building. The wrap terminates at the exterior
wall. The wrap should continue a minimum of 18 inches outside the exterior wall if the wall construction
includes combustible materials (e.g., siding, exterior wall sheathing, etc.). The 18-inch clearance shall be
measured perpendicular to the wall surface. Clearances may be reduced per IMC Table 308.4.2. See IMC
Section 506.3.6.
5. Up-blast fans serving Type I hoods shall be installed with a hinge, restraint, and flexible electrical cable to
permit inspection and cleaning. These do not appear to be specified. The drawing should be revised. See
IMC 506.5.3.
1 .
