<br /> 25 <br />ARTICLE 17 - BEREAVEMENT LEAVE <br /> <br />When death occurs among members of an employee's immediate family, the employee, at his/her request <br />to the department head, shall be granted reasonable and necessary time off to make arrangements as <br />needed and to attend the funeral and shall be compensated at his/her normal salary for the hours lost from <br />his/her regular schedule, before or after the funeral, with the maximum of two (2) shifts allowance, if <br />working. For non-suppression personnel this shall be forty, (40) hours. This time off shall not be <br />deducted from accumulated sick leave or vacation. The Bereavement Leave must be taken within twelve <br />months of the event. <br /> <br />Members of an employee's immediate family shall be defined as employee's spouse, domestic partner, <br />children, and stepchildren including domestic partner's children; parents, step-parents and siblings of the <br />employee, spouse or domestic partner; grandchildren, grandparents or step-grandparents of the employee, <br />spouse or domestic partner. Any other circumstance with approval of Chief or designee. "Domestic <br />Partner" is defined for purposes of this article as the criteria outlined by the City's Domestic Partner <br />resolution or the State Registry. Proof of criteria may be requested. If there is a disagreement about the <br />employee's time off, the matter shall be resolved after the employee returns to work. <br /> <br />
