32
ARTICLE 21 - WORKING OUT OF CLASSIFICATION

Any firefighter assigned to act as an officer of a higher rank or working in a position of higher
classification shall receive wages for the classification starting from the first shift. This shall not apply to
any job wherein a test is not required for advancement.

If there is a temporary vacancy in a higher rank or higher classification, where crew shortages are not
created, the vacancy shall be filled by an employee who is on the Civil Service promotional list for that
classification and who has completed the promotional workbook and other training requirements for the
position. If no employee on the Civil Service promotional list is available, the most senior employee who
is eligible to take the examination and has completed the promotional workbook and other training
requirements for the position may fill the vacant position (unless bypassed for cause), provided that an
employee may refuse the assignment in which case the next most senior employee eligible to take the
examination will be asked, etc. Except by mutual agreement, each employee shall not be moved between
platoons more than twice per year to fill a temporary vacancy in a higher classification and twice per year
to fill a lateral vacancy resulting directly from an out of class move, provided, however, that these annual
move limitations apply only to this article. One move is defined to include the employee's assignment
from and return to the original platoon.
