NIEHS Oil Spill Cleanup Training Tool
OSHA
High-pressure Hot Water (continued)
Environmental Hazards
• Areas that were cleaned with this technique need to be repeatedly cleaned,
because the oil remains after each cleaning.
• May push the oil deeper into the soil and rock along the beach.
• Microbial populations on the shoreline may become displaced and
destroyed. Many of these organisms (e.g., plankton) are the basis of the
coastal marine food chain, and others (e.g., certain bacteria and fungi) are
capable of facilitating the biodegradation of oil.
• Additional training and safety precautions must be provided if you are
working on this type of operation.
72 WORKER EDUCATION & TRAINING PROGRAM
