The following comments should be addressed
for the proposed projects. Revised drawings should be submitted as needed to address the comments.
1. The proposed beam connects to a moment frame beam. The type of frame (e.g., special, ordinary, etc.) should
be determined and protected zones identified where they occur. Regardless of whether the original design
complied with previous protected zone limitations, new welding should not occur in protected zones.
2. Detail 1/S-1 appears to show a ledger to support the damaged joist. The number and location of the ledgers is
not clear. It is understood that the damaged portion of the joist generally occurs over the elevator shaft, but it is
not clear what support is required to fix this. Also, the support points may impact to performance of the original
joist, which is not longer performing as originally intended and will not perform as originally intended once the
repair is installed. A partial elevation of the damaged joist area clarifying the propose work is
recommended. Additional stiffeners or other modifications to the proposed design may be required.
3. Detail 1/S-2 will induce a significant torsional moment in the exiting moment frame beam. Calculations
substantiating the concurrent loading with in-plane flexural loading should be submitted for review. In addition,
please not the following:
a. The L6 added to the bottom flange appears intended to control torsion. A top brace would be required
to resolve the moment couple.
b. The L6 appears likely to prevent flexural deformations of the moment frame. The purpose of this
connection, and its impact on the moment frame's performance should be clarified and
evaluated. Alternatively, this connection should be removed from the design.
4. Detail 1/S-3 includes a large cope and field welding resulting in a relatively long and shallow built-up flexural
member to provide shear support. It is understood that the cope may partially be intended to allow
installation. It is recommended that the proposed connection be reviewed and revised. For example, the same
fit-up seems feasible if the cope is slanted such that the%"gap is provided at the top and widens to 6" at the
bottom. This will eliminate the flexural forces over the 6-inch gap and may also eliminate the need to field
welding of the L6 members.
The review will recommence once revised submittal documents have been received for review.
