The items are numbered in the order in which they appear on the Structural Plan Review.
Item Response
No.
1. 1st checksheet comment:
The proposed beam connects to a moment frame beam. The type of frame (e.g., special, ordinary,
etc.) should be determined and protected zones identified where they occur. Regardless of whether
the original design complied with previous protected zone limitations, new welding should not occur in
protected zones.
RESPONSE:
Please refer to the last page of the supplemental calculation package showing an image of the Wide
Flange Beam to HSS Column connection of the frame. The connection indicates that the frame must
be at most an ordinary moment frame because the requirements of a special moment frame or
intermediate moment frame are not met by visual inspection.Per the AISC 358 Seismic Design Manual,
ordinary moment frames do not have protected zone requirements. Therefore, new welding on this
beam will not occur in protected zones.
2. 2nd checksheet comment:
Detail 1/S-1 appears to show a ledger to support the damaged joist. The number and location of the
ledgers is not clear. It is understood that the damaged portion of the joist generally occurs over the
elevator shaft, but it is not clear what support is required to fix this. Also, the support points may impact
to performance of the original joist, which is not longer performing as originally intended and will not
perform as originally intended once the repair is installed. A partial elevation of the damaged joist area
clarifying the propose work is recommended. Additional stiffeners or other modifications to the
proposed design may be required.
RESPONSE:
Please refer to the updated Detail 1/S-1, indicating that additional ledgers are to be spaced at 5'-0"oc.
The damaged portion of the joist occurs over the elevator shaft, but the ledgers are to be spaced along
