Task 1 - Fleet Assessment
Planning is the first crucial step in fleet electrification, as decisions made during this stage will have the highest impact on
system performance. Fleet electrification projects are multi-faceted in nature and involve the interdependence of many
variables. The challenge is in sifting through this complexity and in determining the optimal solution that will minimize
investments, reduce total cost of ownership, meet operational requirements, minimize risks, and eliminate any adverse
impact on the electrical network.
Everett Transit has already taken its first steps on the path to electrification, which will proceed as an incremental process.
Careful planning allows the phase out of the fossil fuel-based fleet and the phase in of new electric vehicles while
ensuring reliability is upheld and costs are minimized. The phase out considers the useful life of current fleet vehicles, the
availability of ZEVs that can meet Everett Transit's route needs, various financial parameters, and other considerations. Our
team members bring experience conducting zero emissions transition plans and considering phasing needs and
approaches for transit agencies across the country.
Fleet Inventory, Modeling, and Analysis
An accurate fleet inventory provides a critical baseline for fleet management planning.
The Planning Communities Team will work with the City of Everett staff to compile the
vehicle model and year, engine type, mileage, and other information needed to assess
vehicle conditions and replacement timelines for the current Everett Transit fleets (fixed
route and paratransit). We will provide templates and examples to streamline data
collection related to modeling efforts. Our key teaming partner, MGL, can also provide GPS data loggers for use on each of
the routes which can obtain high-resolution data.
Sample Analysis/Modeling Data Collected
Route and Block Details Passenger Loading
Operating Schedules Heating and Cooling Load Data
Existing GTFS and Telematics Data Weather Data, Aux Load Data
Gradient Data Historical Operational Data, including operating BEB data
Route Modeling and Battery Sizing
To meet all of the challenges and requirements for fleet electrification planning, the transportation system and energy
(driving/charging) process must be modeled jointly, quantifying electrical demand, assessing impact on the electrical
17
17
